Nearly everyone dreams of moving to the country at some point, but few people are crazy enough to actually do it. I'm one of those few. In 1994, when I was 26, I sold my little bakery cafe, packed up 200 boxes of books & antiques, & waved goodbye to my native California. Armed with a very basic knowledge of gardening, an overenthusiastic sense of adventure, & lots of naivete, I ended up on a 280-acre, 140-year-old farm in the middle of nowhere. I became cook, gardener, shepherd, farmhand, vet, surrogate mom, wildlife expert, sheep midwife & animal undertaker. My prep school education & graphic design background were useless. I went from attending restaurant openings & gallery receptions to working the rural fire dept's BBQ booth at the crafts fair & munching fried pies at country auctions. Nine years ago I moved to an even more remote 240-acre farm which I share with sheep, chickens, 4 dogs, 9 cats, 5 very entertaining donkeys, & one really well fed farmguy. My life revolves around food.

I keep imagining these animals talking to each other when you turn your back. (like Babe and his friends.)

Adorable! Katherine Dunn should turn that photo into a peace button.

It makes my heart warm to see how cute this is!!!! Your pictures make my want me own farm animals.
The cuteness is overwhelming! I love it!
That picture is hardcore cute, there's no other word for it! I think they were planning this pose so they could be the daily photo.
For that ammount of cute I may even let Dan in the house for the day.
Absolutely precious!
How sweet!!
That is too gorgeous! I love it. Thanks Farmgirl for posting it.
Dan has good taste.
Utterly adorable.
I have to say, readong your blog made me more easily fall in love with the donkeys I saw at a local farm. I want them all, now!
sweet babies. I discovered your blog when searching for yogurt cheese about 2 months ago, and just like placing milk out for a stray kitty- I stayed. I'm even attempting a blog. Thanks for all things good. Good for the heart, head and soul. Bless you.
Dan is truly special. Are you still thinking of getting him a dog of his own?
Soft fuzziness overload. I must go lie down now.
Holy cats Susan, that is like the Priceless part of a VISA commercial. (and what does Dan need with a dog when he's got his own sheep?) lol... T.
Awww what adorable friends there. That's so cute. Your site is a breath of fresh air, a ray of sunshine.
You should submit this to CuteOverload! So very sweet.
This is soooo cute...it's like they're best friends!! :)
There's a song with some phrases, "When this old world starts to getting me down," and I'm thinking that the perfect ending would be "come see you!"
Your pictures reach the inner most yearnings of those of us who feel the need to escape, although I know that your life is filled with hard physical labor.
Thank you so much for sharing your life and the palette of beautiful colors that God is bestowing upon you. It is truly so beautiful where you are!
Is that the sweetest thing ever?
In a world that is too busy, too fast, and too loud, your windows into the slow and the quiet are a special gift. I grew up in such a place, and many times miss it very much...
OMG! This has to be my favorite photo. THANKS for posting it.
Cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute!!
Your blog makes me smile every day. Thank you.
Curious what the spots on Cary's head are? Little bald patches caused by something?
Oh geez. I just said, "Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!" so loud. At my desk. At work. They know I'm ignoring my enormous project and looking at cute animals.
How GDF cute is Dan anyways?! I love him and his sweet donkey nose. And of course Cary, well, she's a doll.
