Nearly everyone dreams of moving to the country at some point, but few people are crazy enough to actually do it. I'm one of those few. In 1994, when I was 26, I sold my little bakery cafe, packed up 200 boxes of books & antiques, & waved goodbye to my native California. Armed with a very basic knowledge of gardening, an overenthusiastic sense of adventure, & lots of naivete, I ended up on a 280-acre, 140-year-old farm in the middle of nowhere. I became cook, gardener, shepherd, farmhand, vet, surrogate mom, wildlife expert, sheep midwife & animal undertaker. My prep school education & graphic design background were useless. I went from attending restaurant openings & gallery receptions to working the rural fire dept's BBQ booth at the crafts fair & munching fried pies at country auctions. Nine years ago I moved to an even more remote 240-acre farm which I share with sheep, chickens, 4 dogs, 9 cats, 5 very entertaining donkeys, & one really well fed farmguy. My life revolves around food.

Such lovely shades of red, I'm a bit envious! I'm lamenting my poor tomato crop and to make things worse, I accidentally pulled two green tomatoes off the vine yesterday :-(
Gorgeous colors! I plant my garden so that I have a variety of colors to compliment each other. My son is quite the gardener and he will say things like: "Here mom, these red peppers will look pretty next to your green chiles and yellow squash". Well, we love a pretty garden.

Lovely peppers! I had to write you that your recipes are always a hit! I made the savory tomato pesto pie (added some canadian bacon for the men who always want to know 'where's the meat?') and everyone loved it, plus the fact that the house smelled great while it was cooking. You did it again!
No wonder I've been craving tomato this and tomato that. It's all the lovely rich reds in your photographs!
Tree: Have you ever had fried green tomatoes? I made some last year for our daughter. We both thought that we were in heaven. Of course, those tomatoes were purchased at a roadside stand...
Ah, I do miss the garden. Our one tomato plant was obstinate due to lack of rain and water rationing this summer. There's always next year, though!

I went to the grocery store and pretended that I was in a garden. The produce didn't quite measure up there...
Skye did enjoy having fresh fruits and veggies, though.
DH grilled the corn on the cob (from Colorado, so sweet!) in the husk. It was very juicy and tender. Now, if I just had some really fresh peppers and tomatoes for dinner tomorrow...
