About Me
- Name: Farmgirl Susan
- Location: Missouri, United States
Nearly everyone dreams of moving to the country at some point, but few people are crazy enough to actually do it. I'm one of those few. In 1994, when I was 26, I sold my little bakery cafe, packed up 200 boxes of books & antiques, & waved goodbye to my native California. Armed with a very basic knowledge of gardening, an overenthusiastic sense of adventure, & lots of naivete, I ended up on a 280-acre, 140-year-old farm in the middle of nowhere. I became cook, gardener, shepherd, farmhand, vet, surrogate mom, wildlife expert, sheep midwife & animal undertaker. My prep school education & graphic design background were useless. I went from attending restaurant openings & gallery receptions to working the rural fire dept's BBQ booth at the crafts fair & munching fried pies at country auctions. Nine years ago I moved to an even more remote 240-acre farm which I share with sheep, chickens, 4 dogs, 9 cats, 5 very entertaining donkeys, & one really well fed farmguy. My life revolves around food.

Happy Thanksgiving, Farmgirl! Don't dwell on what's come before as it only brings guilt. Just speak your gratefulness and happiness as you think of it. Getting older is a wonderful blessing because you no longer care if you sound silly. And I am grateful for YOU and the whole tumbled-together farm of yours. You're now part of my family.

I'm always amazed by how many different expressions the dogs can have. And on top of that they can wiggle their ears and have tails to wag. I think I have dog envy. No, wait. I know I have dog envy. (Though when I say something to Joe like, "I sure wish I could move my ears back and forth like that," he always says, "I'm sure glad you can't.") : )

Oh, maybe I could have worded that sentence about missed opportunities better. I wasn't dwelling on the past in a bad or guilt ridden way. It was more like I was thinking of how often a simple "thank you" would mean so much but just isn't said. Back to that whole "it's the little things in life," maybe.
I think I'll just swipe Jamie's words:
"And yeah, let's take all the opportunities we can."
One of my very favorite phrases is, "Thank you for you." But I never hear it, and I rarely think to use it.
Oh, and I'm also swiping my new favorite phrase from you--"tumbled-together farm." I love it. It's perfect.
I still can't believe how many amazing people I have met since I started Farmgirl Fare less than six months ago. Yes, I, too, have a much bigger 'family' now! : )
